The Wolverine Story

The Westside Wolverines can trace their history back many decades. The team originally was St. Joes football team from St Joes Catholic grade school just a few blocks east from our current practice field. In 1990 the school decided to stop sponsoring a tackle football team. Two gentleman named Chuck Wagner  and         Carl Ambrosius decided to continue the program without the schools sponsorship. At this time the team was renamed to the "Westside Wildcats". Their jersey colors were purple and white. After the 1991 season Mr. Wagner decided to move on and Carl Ambrosius took over running the program. During this time the team was composed of 7th and 8th grade players combined to form a single team with about 50 kids on the team.  It was also around this time that the rivalry with the Menominee Hornets started. After the 1995 season Mr. Ambrosius decide to leave and Glenn Gajeski bought the equipment. In 1997 it was decided to change team colors and nickname to the current colors and the Wolverine name. Also in 1997 the team was divided into separate 7th and 8th grade teams.  In 1998 a sixth grade team was added and the following year a 5th grade team was then added.  After the 2003 season, Mr. Gajeski decided to start the process of turning over leadership of the club. At that time our present board was set up. The board consists of 7 members who oversee the Wolverine football and cheerleader programs. Today the Wolverines serve over 170 boys and girls in the football and cheerleading programs. Include over 25 coaches and we form the largest single youth football team in northeast Wisconsin.  We count ourselves as a club deep and rich in TRADITION and LOYALTY!
